Armed police and emergency services rushed to the scene of a dog attack this morning that left two women hospitalised, officials have said.

Greater Manchester Police said armed officers responded to reports of an altercation between two dogs on Leigh Road in Atherton at approximately 11.30am on Saturday morning.

In what was described as an “isolated incident”, the service said one of the pets launched at the other, and the owners of both pets were injured during the ensuing fight.

Police said the injuries to the women were deemed “not-life-threatening”, but emergency services took the two to hospital while Leigh Road was cordoned off.

Eyewitnesses told the Manchester Evening News they saw a woman being taken for treatment with her hands” wrapped in bandages.

In a statement, GMP said the women are receiving treatment, one dog was left in serious condition, and another was seized by authorities.

The service said: “At around 11.30am this morning (Saturday 2 September), officers were called to reports of a dog attacking another dog on a playing field near Leigh Road.

“Specialist officers and emergency services attended the scene, and the owners of both animals were taken to hospital with bite injuries which are not life-threatening and not believed to be life-changing.”

The service added that initial enquiries suggested the offending dog “broke free from its collar” and attacked the other.

They said both owners were injured as they attempted to separate the dogs

GMP said investigators will look into the incident, which saw no other parties injured.

The statement concluded: “The offending dog has been seized and an investigation will take place. No other party was injured during this isolated incident.”
